Aranea 1.0 M2 Released

Friday, March 31st, 2006

This release is a result of more than a month work from Aranea team. The API has been cleaned up and the documentation greatly improved. We now have a Hands-On Tutorial and an introductory Technical Paper. The Reference Manual has been substantially rewritten.

The goal of this release is to gather feedback from a broader community. So you are very welcome to try it out and comment, suggest or criticize the framework, its documentation and examples. The API may yet change, but most probably the migration will be more-or-less painless, since we already have some in-house projects running on Aranea in production.

Since SourceForge CVS server was down for the last two days we could not commit the M2 changes, but a patch against the anonymous public CVS “change_1″ branch is available. Full source is also included in distribution, so there shouldn’t really be a need to apply this patch unless CVS troubles persist.

Be sure to visit the download section as we are off to the Aranea release party. We weren’t so happy with the M1 release and postponed the festivities. Now with a pretty solid M2 release we guess we can take some time off :).
Cya, Aranea Team.

Migration successful

Monday, March 20th, 2006

We started using sourceforge.net about a month ago. SF performs pretty well for cvs and mailinglists, but not the same for web. People reported getting 1kb/s download speeds for the documentation and the pdf files very often came corrupted via download.

The main reasons for moving most of our infrastructure from SF to johncompanies.com were:

  • Web hosting caused problems for our users (wiki, forum, blog, changelogic).
  • Mailinglists had the prefix $PROJECT_NAME. Writing araneaframework-devel@lists.sourceforge.net was pretty long. aranea-devel@lists.araneaframework.org is 5 characters shorter ;)

Now we have set up our community

We opened up two mailinglists:

  • Aranea devel mailinglist. This meant for the development talk on project Aranea Framework. Register here
  • Aranea announce mailinglist. This is a read-only list for annoncements on Aranea. Register here

We will be releasing M2 shortly this week. Be sure to check back.
